The Ultimate Guide To The Types Of Graphic Design Styles

Characterised by its strong emphasis on minimalism and precision, this artistic approach transformed how we perceive visual communication. Moreover, the Bauhaus movement also fostered an international network of artists, designers, and educators who carried its ideals across borders and oceans. As a result, the Bauhaus ethos spread globally, influencing design schools and creative disciplines worldwide.

Graphic Design Styles: A Visual Guide

Luis Prado’s design style is minimalistic in both typography and elements, as seen in the last image above. Minimalism uses the power of white space to allow the simple shapes and designs to convey a message. Remember that less is more, and omit details that aren’t essential to the overall design.

The definition of grunge is “grime or dirt,” and you can clearly see these reflected in the grunge design style. Typography is typically bold and roughly drawn, with letters dripping or splattered, as though drawn with a rebellious attitude. Shapes are torn, ripped, or crooked, giving it a rawness that may remind you of punk or rock.

Most Popular Types of Interior Design Styles

For this reason, minimalist design is incredibly popular with web designers, because the site’s content and features are the reason that the user is visiting in the first place, making the design more usable. This is especially important for homepage designs—the most popular page on your website. When looking at rustic interior design it can be defined with a few basic signs. There will always be natural materials, industrial touches, and farmhouse charm all around. The rustic design style was originally born from inspirations of the Romantic movement.

But First, An Important Sidequest: Declutter Your Space

Transitional design is what we like to call the happy medium of interior design styles. This is the style for you if traditional design is too stuffy, but contemporary is too out of your comfort zone. Soft, neutral color palettes, shiplap panels (check out these peel and stick ones from Stikwood) and painted brick walls also contribute to the look. The most casual of all interior design styles is the industrial look, a trend born out of necessity in the 1960s that still thrives today.

"Even the idea of upcycling in fashion is represented, with the vintage chairs we found in Clignancourt and reupholstered in naturally dyed leather," Cox notes. "One of the trends I’m most excited about is a lime plaster wall finish," says Decorist designer Jessie Yoon of Casa Nolita. It should come as no surprise that modern coastal interiors often rely on a crisp, white base layered with sea and sky-inspired blues and earthy browns and greens. The overall feeling should be clean and light—the embodiment of a breath of fresh, salty air.

Of course, these styles and trends change rapidly from month to month, so there's always something new to learn. And if you land on a new style all your own, go ahead and give it a name—we might just be writing about it next week. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, there is no doubt you will now begin to recognise these and other distinctive graphic design styles all over the place. Developing and cultivating your knowledge of design styles through continuous research will allow you to become a more adaptive and effective designer no matter what project you take on.

Other Design Styles

Modern interior design came on the radar in the early to mid 20th century. Due to the mix of Scandinavian, mid-century modern, and post-modern design, we have our current definition of modern. Most traditional homes have a very neutral color palette with pops of color brought in with oil paintings or floral arrangements. If you’re not into ‘matchy-matchy’ traditional may not be your cup of tea. Above all, consistency is key so it’s common to find matching furniture sets.

A Scandinavian interior design aesthetic encompasses function and clean lines, but uses a soft, neutral color palette and ample touches from the natural world (think lots of wood and hints of stone). Forgo window treatments and use rugs sparingly, if at all, to let the light in and show off your wood floors. IKEA is a natural choice to find Scandinavian-inspired decor, which the band is built upon, but to find higher-quality pieces, include other Scandi-focused stores like Scandinavian Designs,  FinnStyle and NordicNest. Design styles are abundant and unique, so it is up to you to find the style that will work best for you. There is also the option of combining elements of several styles in order to get that personal touch.

With our graphic design course, we teach you how to make research a fundamental part of your design process. You will develop diverse and well researched references for each brief you tackle, which in turn allows you to back up and argue for your design choices as they relate to the brief. Perhaps something about the boho style of one bedroom calls to you, or something about a mid-century modern living room stands out—save both. Now that the Corporate Memphis design style is falling out of favor — what comes next? On consulting firm Graditur’s website, designer Gerson Iglesias chose a background image of a cityscape, consistent with the firm’s work in the engineering and construction industries. The sans serif font communicates professionalism and competence thanks to its familiar appearance and legibility.

As the name implies, loungewear is a style comprising clothes that you usually wear while lounging or relaxing on your couch or bed during the day. That includes sleep pants, leggings, sweatpants, harem pants, jumpsuits, cardigans, and sweatshirts. However, people also wear these clothes while walking in the park, day out with friends, and grocery shopping. Combining morbid and mystery and with a great influence from gothic music and fiction, this style is synonymous with black. As such, you usually wear black all over, such as clothes, lipstick, makeup, and shoes, or at least most of your attire is black.

The dwelling is designed to not only comfortably accommodate a family but also be capable of adapting to potential other satellite programs. Considering the frequent tourist visitations, the residence and its multipurpose/rec-space portion of the house could be potentially rented/adapted for special events. Anything ranging from small exhibits or private events could be accommodated. The dwelling appearance is based on a chimera like nature of Hollywood, distinct elements assembled to make a whole. The idea is to Hopefully leave the visitor with a profound experience of a place that teeter totters on the fulcrum of dreams and reality. The Motion House’s design is perceived as a silver screen of the ground that takes its cue from the Hollywood’s motion picture.

From here the view is open to the wide landscape, from the hills to the LA urban sprawl. The sheet music is complex, made up of overlapping signs, located on a fraught ground, characterized by icons of the global collective imaginary. The project is based on simplification, on reduction, on pure forms, on the enhancement of well-being and sustainability.

The Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and the Dolby Theater where the Oscars are hosted are all a stone’s throw from this popular tourist destination. You can find interesting views of the Hollywood Sign right in the heart of Hollywood itself at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. This is one of the easiest places to get a shot of the Hollywood Sign, especially if you have young children, as they can safely run around while you get the perfect shot. You’ll also get spectacular views of the Hollywood Sign from Griffith Observatory as a bonus.

For a unique take on the Hollywood Sign picture, head to Lake Hollywood, where you can get a shot of the sign with a beautiful reservoir in the foreground. However, there are a ton of great spots all over the city where you can find a Hollywood Sign viewpoint without hiking. There’s no way to get close to the Hollywood Sign without hiking, due to its location at the summit of Mt. Lee. Hiking to the summit of Mt. Lee will take you to a spot just behind the sign, which is the closest point to the Hollywood Sign.

Parking for non-residents is permitted on weekdays, but only on the western side of the street. Provided you’re not blocking a driveway, you can park for free Monday to Friday on Deronda Drive. The closest entrance to Griffith Park is at the end of Deronda Drive. Pass through the blue gate under the white arch and head up the trail until you reach the summit of Mount Lee. The first is that it’s not possible to get close enough to touch the sign.

Senate Bill 563 would require local police to make their “best effort” to comply with the enforcement of federal immigration law. In February, the institute published another study that found undocumented immigrants in Texas commit homicide at slightly lower rates than native-born Americans, 2.4 percent compared to 2.8 percent. The Hollywood Sign was never meant to be a destination, so there’s no road past the sign that you can drive on. If you’re looking for a picture of the sign from a palm-lined street, Frankin Avenue at the intersection with Gower gives you a good view of the sign. The view is right at the start of the trail, so you can hop out, take a picture, and continue with your day if you’re short on time. This is not a hike to the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee, but an easy, flat-alternative hike where you can find a unique shot of the sign with a dazzling blue lake in the foreground.

About 40 percent of those people are ultimately granted asylum by a court, he said. Last month, 43 percent of Granite Staters polled by the UNH Survey Center said illegal immigration is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem in New Hampshire. That jumped to 83 percent when asked about illegal immigration in the United States.

My goal is to inspire others to get out and find their next adventure in California. Whether it’s escaping to an alpine lake in the Sierras, finding peace among the giant redwoods, or road tripping down the PCH, there’s always more to explore in this beautiful state. If you want a picture of the sign from the front, you’ll need to look for another spot.

The trail then connects to Mt. Lee, where you’ll reach the overlook for the Hollywood Sign. If you want to take a Hollywood Sign hike along these trails, plan to arrive early before the sun gets too hot and the parking lots too busy. Embark on a Hollywood Sign hike starting from the Griffith Observatory. The trailhead for the Hollyridge Trail is located near the Sunset Ranch Hollywood Stables on Canyon Drive at the Brush Canyon Trailhead. Delighted with the Hollywood sign and being able to get to the best view.

My favorite viewpoint for the front of the sign is from Griffith Observatory, which is also easy to access by public transport. The best place to see the Hollywood Sign depends on what you want in your shot. If you want a picture from behind the sign, with Los Angeles below, you’ll need to hike to the summit of Mt. Lee. There’s an overlook on Mulholland Drive with a few parking spaces where you can see the sign as well as take pictures of the city below. Parking is available for free before noon on weekdays in the small Griffith Observatory parking lot, but you’ll need a credit card to pay for parking in the afternoons or on the weekend. If you’re lacking the time or inclination to walk, there are plenty of places to view the letters without hiking to the Hollywood sign on Mount Lee.

This makes for a very cool picture, but perhaps you want to get the front side in your shot. Griffith Park has over 4,000 acres of shady forests, sunny picnic spots, and spectacular views of Los Angeles. The park also has several trails of varying length and difficulty that lead right up to the 50-foot-high Hollywood Sign letters.

Alternatively, you can get your shot of the Hollywood Sign with an interesting foreground. Some of the best views of the Hollywood Sign can be seen from neighborhood streets, parks, and lakes around the city. Secondly, parking is difficult in the narrow, winding streets in the Hollywood hills. If you’re driving to a Hollywood Sign hike or looking for the best Hollywood Sign view, take note of our advice on parking. The Griffith Observatory not only offers amazing exhibits and views of downtown Los Angeles, but it’s also a popular spot to capture the Hollywood Sign in the distance. Inside the observatory, you can explore the planetarium, Foucault pendulum, telescopes, and a Tesla coil for free.

Continue up Mulholland to connect with Deronda Drive, where you’ll find the blue gate that leads to the summit of Mt. Lee. This way, you can get great shots of both sides of the iconic sign. Eventually, you’ll be able to cut through to Mulholland Highway, which is about the closest you can get to the front of the sign. Park at the end of Canyon Drive in the parking lot for another Griffith Park hike, the Brush Canyon Trail. After another half-mile, you’ll come to Dante’s View, a good opportunity to catch your breath while admiring the views across the city.

It’s an 11.5-acre park, located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard with lots of things to do and see. You can see the Hollywood Sign from a slightly elevated position up on Olive Hill. While it’s not the closest or most direct view of the sign, it’s certainly a picturesque one.

LA Explained's Last House on Mulholland is the picture perfect shot of the Hollywood Sign. Sending National Guard soldiers to the Texas border isn’t the state’s only response to the surge in undocumented migrants entering the county. The contradiction between facts and talking points has led Democrats to see Sununu’s deployment to Texas – and Republican claims about undocumented migrants – as political stunts. What is almost never said is that it’s mostly Americans, not undocumented migrants, smuggling fentanyl into the country.

Hollywood Boulevard & Highland Center

While there isn’t a way to walk directly behind the letters of the sign, you can get a view from behind the sign up on Mount Lee. The hike to the peak of Mount Lee via Mount Lee Drive is the shortest and most direct route at about 3 miles roundtrip, but that also means it’s steep and somewhat difficult in places. If you’re up for the challenge, the view from the top is incredible. Start out at 6301 Innsdale Dr. You can park along the residential streets near the trailhead. The Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign is located at the north end of the observatory parking lot. Aline Barnsdall donated this stunning hilltop site to the people of Los Angeles in 1927 as a public destination for the appreciation of art and architecture.

Griffith Observatory

The closest you can get is right behind the sign at Mount Lee (see below) or just to the side of it while hiking. Communication as a necessity for modern living.A house that talks.Jarvis fantasy turned reality.Your house greeting you? Grounded in the history and culture of the site, this is not the last house on Mulholland, but perhaps the first. I can remember when the sign read HOLLYWOODLAND, announcing the arrival of the neighborhood, and the exile of the last four letters. I took it upon myself to resurrect these letters, and allow them to accomplish their fundamental purpose. The letters once again glow among the flashing of signal towers and warmth of homes.

If you do the whole hike, there are actually 3 viewing locations in one. Whether you’re driving or want to do some hiking, there are some really great Hollywood Sign photo spots. Remember that LA traffic is notoriously bad and hiking spots are likely to be super packed on weekends. If you can embark on this journey during the week, you’ll be slightly happier with the outcome. The site is strongly characterized by the wild pattern of the surrounding nature.

But she was uninterested in the extravagant gift after their breakup. Summit the highest peak in Griffith Park for incredible views of Los Angeles, as well as the Hollywood Sign. The big cat gained worldwide fame when he was caught on camera crossing in front of the Hollywood Sign.

The circle is the representation of these concepts, in analogy with the iconic Hollywood sign and its own shadow projected on the hills. What neither city will do is cooperate with federal immigration officials to enforce civil immigration rules, including detaining someone based solely on their immigration status. It is a civil offense – not a crime – to be in the country without documentation unless the person is here after being deported.

Possible future is that the home functions will be realized in the public areas. The individual space will be reduced to the time when we want to be alone, future “shelters”. More such houses would be needed for the growing population on limited area. Buildings for the individuals could give the space back to the community (as public and green area).

Hollywood Sign Photo Spots: Where to Get Perfect Shots

Located at the end of Mulholland Hwy, this vacant residential lot offers the closest access to the Hollywood sign, making it a pretty popular spot. It’s a unique opportunity to capture the postcard-perfect photo with the iconic sign right there in the background. Although like street parking everywhere in this city, you may find it hard to locate a spot.

It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Los Angeles and dare I say, the world. The cool part is that it’s visible from multiple locations across Los Angeles, so while you’re visiting the city, you’ll have an opportunity to snap a few iconic photos of the sign, if you want to. Nowadays the functions of the work and living spaces are mixed – working at home but also “living” at work.

The closest place to park and take a snap of the Hollywood Sign is at 3000 Canyon Lake Drive, Hollywood. Taking a shot of the sign or hiking as close as possible to the letters is one of the most popular things to do in the Los Angeles area. Another hiking option to see the Hollywood Sign up close is the Brush Canyon Trail, which also begins at Griffith Observatory.

This bus, which costs just 50 cents per ride, also stops at Mt. Hollywood Drive for Griffith Park hiking trails at the Greek Theater. You’ll eventually get to a bend where you’ll find the last house on Mulholland (this is marked on Google Maps), a fantastic spot for pictures of the Hollywood Sign. For your Hollywood Sign close-up, trek to the top of Mount Lee along one of these beautiful trails through the largest urban park in the US. If you want to visit on a weekend or a holiday, it’s better to take a Lyft or Uber to this neighborhood. Locals are notoriously quick to call the tow trucks on hapless tourists who park in the wrong spot.

The park itself is dog-friendly and has a children’s play area, plus picnic benches. You’ll get a great shot of the Hollywood Sign surrounded by nature, in contrast to most other pictures of the letters. Although you can’t get down to the lake itself, this is one of the prettiest urban hikes in Los Angeles and perfect for a hot day. If you want to take a stroll, head onto Mulholland Dam for more views and a pleasant, tree-shaded path around the perimeter of this man-made lake. Residents of the housing development here are sensitive to tourists trespassing on their property, so be sure to stick to the road and don’t stand on anyone’s driveway. This trail is a little rockier and less well-defined than the Brush Canyon Trail, making it better suited to more experienced hikers.

Our proposal integrates an interior kinetic volume—a rotating platform, that contains the circulation and specialized functions (kitchen, study, bedroom, washroom) of the unit. The dynamic rotation creates the possibility for unconventional programmatic combinations to align with the ideal living conditions (view, access to sunlight, ventilation, and openness). Our design liberates its user from the constraints of static architecture, eliminating sequential circulation, fixed program, and a definite perception of space. Celebrating the Hollywood Sign's 100 years, The Last House on Mulholland presents a new sculpture by Office Kovacs at the sign's closest selfie spot.

Ceiling Design Trends 2024: Top 10 Update Ideas

Although there are many different cove ceiling designs, the general concept is the same – rounded edges and sharp corners. With this style, the ceiling elevates towards the middle gradually. The rise can be steep or gradual, depending on your preferences. It is characterized by its two barrel vaults that intersect at 90-degree angles.

Vaulted Ceiling Beams

To give your ceiling a rustic look, consider adding wood paneling or exposed wood beams to your vaulted ceiling. For a modern take, you can give the ceiling texture and lighting. A well-designed ceiling not only enhances aesthetics but also adds dimension, character, and a sense of completeness to your space. The beauty of exploring ceiling ideas is that they cater to a wide array of tastes and spaces, seamlessly integrating into every room in your home.

The New-Age Suspended Ceiling

Just like on your walls, there are near-endless iterations of molding applications you can do to your ceilings. For a space that reads as timeless but still very now, take a page out of Jeremiah Brent's book and apply box molding to your ceiling. He used it on the angular cove ceiling in this primary suite to accentuate the graphic structure and bring added depth (and an intimate feel) to the room. If your heart flutters when you see the work of Bunny Williams or Dorothy Draper, this ceiling design is right up your alley. Treillage—also known as trellis or latticework—is a unique treatment that takes what many assume is an outdoor garden structure and places it on the walls or ceiling. In this room by Cara Fox, panels of white treillage cover the ceilings, armoire, and custom bed frame for a subtle, textural twist that transforms an attic into a sunny escape.

Or perhaps you mount birch tree stumps of varying lengths on end. A floating or suspended ceiling creates dimension and height. The multiple levels will fool the eye into thinking that the overall ceiling is taller than it really is. Depending on the room, you could have one large central suspended ceiling panel. If a room is lacking texture, an all-wood ceiling is a good idea. It automatically gives a space depth and warmth, and offers an inviting contrast to neutral seating.

Creating a unique, indoor-outdoor effect, the blue ceiling design is mirrored by the blue rug on the floor, creating an elegant feeling of unity and cohesion. With the red sofa adding a striking element of contrast, this living room may be compact but it is still bursting with personality and character. Instead of installing all new wood beams, utilize old barn wood or strip existing beams of their paint. This wood living room ceiling idea gives a natural, rustic look that adds textural interest to the living room. Keep walls and the ceiling area white for maximum visual impact.

Create a Coffered Ceiling with Molding

Recessed LED lighting can also be used to create a warm and inviting space. The color you choose for your LED lighting can also affect the ambiance of the room. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most popular ceiling design ideas that will get your creative juices flowing. Look at the following Master Bedroom with Natural Traces designed by pros through online design services. The choice in favor of the mirrored ceiling underlines the spacious feature and makes the space feel lighter than it is. Additionally, such a design trick ensures the mirror reflects the homeowner’s aura, and the bedroom feels personal.

The intimate and luxurious feel of this alcove in Amagansett, NY, is amplified by the rich blue furniture and walls. "The dramatic wallpapered ceiling really helps deliver the sophisticated room we intended," says designer Alicia Murphy. The wallpaper is from Zak + Fox, with Murphy describing the pattern as "intricate and cool — perfectly paired with the saturated blue paint and sofa."

And on the contrary, we will meet fewer projects with PVC panels and coffered ceiling. The inception of the suspended ceiling heralded a new age in spatial design and utility. In came a dynamic, adaptive, and functional approach to ceilings.

Ceiling Ideas FAQs

They achieved it by painting the beams and walls a shade of clean white. A neutral rug and furniture give the entire room an airy look, and the vaulted ceiling allows natural light from a wall of windows to fill the open floor plan. Wood paneling extending across the entire living room ceiling helps add warmth to this living room design. White walls with black trim could easily make the room feel cold, but the living room ceiling idea paired with wood floors keeps it cozy and homey. Since the colors are neutral, bold blue and dark orange furniture stands out even more. One of the most beautiful kitchen ceiling ideas is a metal ceiling.

Tray ceilings also open up the opportunity to get really creative with lighting. Though technically a type of vaulted ceiling, cathedral ceilings are much more. Named after European grand cathedral interiors, these types of ceilings are characterized by their sloping sides and a central point that is much higher than the two sides.

Eldridge recommends using tin snips for any pruning that’s needed to accommodate vents, speakers or light fixtures. If you’re planning to paint the panels, use an oil-based paint; to avoid chipping, paint after the panels have been installed. Panels come in many different patterns and start at $18 per 2×4 sheet; tin cornices, molded fillers and lay-in panels for suspended ceilings are also available. You rarely notice one, but it has a big impact on every room. In fact, you look right at it when you do sit-ups or lie down for a nap.

Despite the continued repeal efforts, voters are likely to have the power this November to decide on the future of abortion rights in the state themselves. The law is set to go into effect as early as June 8, though Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes has said her office is working to find ways to delay that date. The ban is likely to go into effect for a short period of time — even if the Senate passes it next week and Hobbs signs it shortly thereafter — because under Arizona law, repeals don't go into effect until 90 days after a legislative session concludes. Just last week, during the state House's prior session, Democrats in the chamber introduced a bill to repeal the 160-year-old abortion ban and filed a motion to Republican House leaders requesting an immediate vote.

Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Not only does it provide a lot of additional seating for a very small space, but it has a lot of storage underneath.” The designers wrapped the room in a floral wall covering by Thibaut and installed a grass cloth on the ceiling to make the space feel cozier. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug.

"We may still be looking at a period of time when the 1864 [ban] could potentially take effect," Mayes said in a statement. The law the conservative-leaning court ruled was enforceable makes abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs one or helps a woman obtain one. The law was codified in 1901 — and again in 1913, after Arizona gained statehood — and outlaws abortion from the moment of conception but includes an exception to save the woman’s life. "It breaks my heart that you're here to witness this," said House Speaker Pro Tempore Travis Grantham, before casting a "no" vote. "I'm proud of my Republican caucus that has fought this off as long as it has," added Grantham, who accused Democrats of having used the issue as a political cudgel.

The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. “Our two main goals were to create a space that was comfortable and a little bit updated while also retaining that history and not touching or harming all the really cool features that were innate to the room and came with the house,” Meloche says. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt. During a brief state House Rules committee hearing Wednesday, Republicans voted to advance three resolutions — without explaining what they were — that Democrats and abortion rights supporters said were likely the GOP-backed ballot measures. Members of the state Senate, where Republicans also hold a narrow majority, voted last week in favor of a motion to introduce a bill that would repeal the abortion ban. "To see how this has been turned against one party and used as a weaponization of the issue is disgusting," he said. At the end of Wednesday's hearing, Grantham said the vote was an "awful, disgusting situation" and stripped Gress, as well as Democratic Assistant Minority Leader Oscar De Los Santos, of their committee assignments. The state House's vote to repeal came on the chamber's third attempt since the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this month to uphold the 160-year-old near-total ban.

Organizers in the state are likely to succeed in placing a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would create a “fundamental right” to receive abortion care up until fetal viability, or about the 24th week of pregnancy. If voters approve the ballot measure, it would effectively undo the 1864 ban, which now remains law in the state. A successful repeal of the 1864 ban would likely result in state policy reverting to a 15-week ban on abortions that makes exceptions for medical emergencies but not for rape or incest.

In 2013, International House was preserved to a polyester dupe negative by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. It was copied from the excellent Paramount 35mm nitrate studio answer print, the lowest generation surviving copy. The Cab Calloway "Reefer Man" number proved to be dubbed 4 dB louder than the rest of the film, giving the Calloway band an infectious, powerful musical presence. This print premiered in the UCLA Festival of Preservation in 2013 and subsequently toured extensively to archival venues. At International House, a large hotel in metropolitan Wuhu, China Chinese inventor Dr. Wong (Edmund Breese) is soliciting bids for the rights to his "radioscope", a kind of television. Unlike real television, his contraption does not need a camera; it can look in on events anywhere in the world as if it were a ground-penetrating electronic telescope, complete with audio.

After several months of cleaning, the two enlisted their parents' help to get it down to the studs. Now, the couple is working with an engineer to get a new roof on before winter starts this year and has shifted to clearing out the house's grounds. "Imagine having a house back in the day and you could play music everywhere in it from a record player," he says. While cleaning out the home, they found some of the original furniture, old photos of what the house looked like before, and a record player that was hooked up to speakers all over the house. "It was a very eventful first weekend of just trying to maintain what the house looked liked and not letting it get worse," Phipps says. The first step was to put tarps all over the roof to ensure no more water or moisture entered the house.

“I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO.

Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier.

When the two took possession of the home, it had been empty for four years, the couple said. A family built it in the 1960s, and then it was passed down to two siblings, a son and a daughter. The son, an architect, lived in the home for many years, and then, when he passed away, the house went to his sister, who then sold it to Phipps and Volkov. "I think the biggest thing that stood out to me was the architecture of the home because mid-century modern homes are so rare for the area," she said. "We looked past how bad it was because we knew that we could really transform it ourselves. This house has so much potential and we felt very special to be the people to see that."

“We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace.

The actual earthquake, centered off nearby Long Beach, caused widespread major damage to unreinforced masonry and about 120 consequent fatalities. Our schools teach English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Arabic and a wide variety of other languages, and are all independently owned and run. Native California wildflowers accent the Arroyo Vista Garden, which was designed with fire safety in mind. Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. On their third attempt in three weeks, Arizona state House lawmakers voted Wednesday to pass a bill that would repeal the near-total ban on abortion from 1864 that was upheld by the battleground state’s Supreme Court earlier this month.

The Biden campaign blamed Donald Trump for the turmoil, saying that the former president "is responsible for Arizona’s abortion ban" after appointing three of the U.S. Abortion rights supporters and Democrats — all the way up to the White House — praised Arizona lawmakers for their passage of the repeal. Volkov and Phipps plan to keep the mid-century modern look and feel for the exterior with modern appliances and features throughout the house inside.
